Zelenskyy Celebrates Hungarian Opposition Win as 'Victory of Light Over Darkness'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has hailed the opposition victory in Hungary as "the victory of light over darkness," expressing optimism for improved bilateral relations. Speaking at a press conference in Berlin alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelenskyy called for "pragmatic, friendly" ties with the new Magyar government, marking a stark departure from the previously hostile Orbán administration.
Hopes for Pragmatic Cooperation
Zelenskyy emphasized his confidence in future collaboration, stating, "I am sure we will cooperate with Hungary." He articulated a vision for building relations based on mutual cooperation and respect, aiming to foster a more constructive partnership. This shift comes amid ongoing tensions, particularly over the damaged Druzhba pipeline, which has been a focal point of discord between the two nations in recent months.
Pipeline Repair and Symbolic Timing
In a significant development, Zelenskyy announced that the Druzhba pipeline will be repaired by the end of April, though not entirely, but sufficiently to function. This move is seen as a step towards easing tensions. Reflecting on the Hungarian election held on Sunday, 12 April, Zelenskyy noted the symbolic timing, as Ukraine celebrated Easter that same day. He remarked, "The elections when the Hungarian people made their choice were on Sunday, 12 April. In Ukraine we celebrated Easter on that day, the victory of light over darkness. I think it’s very symbolic."
The comments underscore a hopeful outlook for diplomatic engagement, with Zelenskyy positioning the election outcome as an opportunity to reset and strengthen Ukraine-Hungary relations through pragmatic dialogue and shared respect.
