Zelenska urges world action after drone kills toddler

Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska has pleaded with world leaders not to ignore a Russian drone strike that killed one-year-old Angelina Mariukhna in her pram. The appeal follows US President Donald Trump's suggestion that Russia has not "been doing much" in the conflict.

Toddler killed in park attack

Angelina Mariukhna was killed on October 19 when a Russian drone attacked a park. Her mother Inna, 28, and four others, including an 11-year-old, also died in the incident. Over a dozen more people were injured.

In response, Zelenska said: "Parents seize every opportunity to let their children breathe fresh air after spending so much time in shelters. Russian killers took advantage of that moment, too." A photograph of the deceased child has circulated widely, shocking observers globally.

Trump's stance draws criticism

Speaking to journalists at the White House, Trump said: "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven't been doing much." His remarks contrast with UN human rights observers, who warned that Russia's escalating offensives had pushed civilian casualties to among the highest levels since the conflict began in February 2022.

Recent weeks have seen tensions in Trump's relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The United States has been accused of withholding intelligence during Russian bombardments and restricting Ukraine's access to its Starshield satellite system. The US has also acquired Russian diesel and lifted sanctions against Russia.

Starlink slowdown sparks alarm

Elon Musk, an ally of Trump, reportedly instructed the slowdown of a military-grade Starlink version that Ukraine depends on, raising alarm in Kyiv and exposing Ukraine to Russian attacks. Trump has also suggested Zelensky should be removed from his position.

During negotiations in St Petersburg, Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff praised Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying Trump was "deeply grateful" for the diesel arrangement and describing Putin as "humanitarian" for freeing a US detainee. Witkoff told Putin: "Because of you, he's going home to his family. You talk so much about my president, President Trump, being a humanitarian. You are a humanitarian also, sir."
