Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned former US President Donald Trump that their countries could come into conflict if the issue of Taiwan is mishandled, according to Chinese state media reports. The warning was delivered during their summit, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.
Xi's Warning on Taiwan
Xi emphasized that the Taiwan question is the most critical issue in China-US relations. He stated that if mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict, pushing the entire bilateral relationship into a highly perilous situation.
Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua further quoted Xi as telling Trump that improper handling of the Taiwan issue would lead to clashes or conflict, placing China-US relations in a very dangerous place.
The summit took place at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, with both leaders discussing a range of bilateral and global issues. The Taiwan issue remains a sensitive topic, as Beijing considers the self-ruled island a part of its territory and opposes any official contacts with Taipei.
This warning underscores the ongoing tensions between the two superpowers over Taiwan, which has been a persistent point of contention in US-China relations.
