Richard Nixon’s Historic 1972 Visit
President Richard Nixon’s visit to China from 21 to 28 February 1972 marked the first time a sitting US president had set foot in the People’s Republic of China. The trip included a meeting with Premier Zhou Enlai, a banquet where Nixon famously used chopsticks, and tours of the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. These images symbolize the thaw in Cold War tensions.
Gerald Ford in 1975
President Gerald Ford visited China from 1 to 5 December 1975, accompanied by his wife Betty and daughter Susan, as well as George H.W. Bush and Henry Kissinger. Highlights included a visit to the Temple of Heaven and a meeting with Chairman Mao Zedong.
Ronald Reagan’s 1984 Trip
Ronald Reagan’s visit from 26 April to 1 May 1984 included meetings with Deng Xiaoping, tours of the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army in Xi’an, and a visit to a preschool in Shanghai. First Lady Nancy Reagan also visited the Temple of Heaven.
George H.W. Bush in 1989
President George H.W. Bush visited China from 25 to 27 February 1989, just months before the Tiananmen Square protests. He was seen waving to crowds in Tiananmen Square.
Bill Clinton’s 1998 Journey
Bill Clinton, along with Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, visited China from 27 June to 3 July 1998. The family toured the Great Wall, and Clinton dined with President Jiang Zemin. Hillary Clinton visited a girls’ school in Shanghai.
George W. Bush in 2008
During the Beijing Olympics, George W. Bush attended a welcome banquet at the Great Hall of the People alongside Vladimir Putin, Hu Jintao, and Jacques Rogge.
Barack Obama’s 2009 and 2016 Visits
Barack Obama toured the Forbidden City in November 2009 and later met with Xi Jinping at the G20 Summit in Hangzhou in September 2016.
Donald Trump’s 2017 Visit
Donald Trump visited Beijing from 8 to 10 November 2017, where he and Melania Trump joined Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan for a concert at a primary school and a stroll through the Forbidden City. The two leaders also held a press conference at the Great Hall of the People.
