The United Nations has issued a dire warning over escalating famine risks in Gaza, as Israeli military restrictions continue to severely limit humanitarian aid deliveries. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), food shortages have reached catastrophic levels, particularly in southern cities like Khan Younis.
Critical Food Shortages
The WFP reports that only a fraction of necessary food supplies is reaching Gaza, with Israeli authorities blocking or delaying aid trucks at border crossings. "We are seeing families forced to skip meals or survive on scraps," a WFP spokesperson stated.
Humanitarian Access Blocked
Despite international appeals, Israel maintains tight control over Gaza's borders, citing security concerns. This has left aid agencies struggling to distribute even basic staples like flour and cooking oil. Hospitals report rising malnutrition cases among children and the elderly.
Political Stalemate
The crisis comes amid stalled ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Western diplomats warn the blockade could constitute a violation of international law if famine conditions are confirmed. The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the situation this week.
