Donald Trump has announced that a deal with Iran to end hostilities is scheduled to be signed on Sunday, with the Strait of Hormuz set to reopen immediately afterwards. The former president made the claim on his Truth Social platform, stating: 'The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL.'
However, Iran has offered a different timeline. Esmaeil Baqaei, a spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, said on Saturday that the signing date has yet to be determined and 'will not be tomorrow'. He added, though, that 'the possibility of this happening in the coming days cannot be ruled out'.
Both Washington and Tehran have expressed increasing optimism that weeks of halting negotiations may be drawing to a close. Since an 8 April truce paused the worst of the fighting, Trump has repeatedly insisted a deal was near, only for talks to drag on.
Mediators have also signalled that an agreement is in the offing, as the warring parties appear closer to a final settlement. The potential deal would mark a significant step towards de-escalation in the region.
