Donald Trump announced Saturday that a major peace agreement with Iran is near finalization, following a high-level conference call from the Oval Office with key regional leaders. Writing on Truth Social, the U.S. president stated that a Memorandum of Understanding has been “largely negotiated,” subject to final details being settled between the U.S., the Islamic Republic of Iran, and a broad coalition of Middle Eastern and South Asian nations.
Breakthrough in Diplomatic Efforts
The announcement was delivered via a social media post detailing a high-level Oval Office conference call. Trump confirmed that the Straight of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint for global oil shipments, will reopen as part of the agreement. The breakthrough comes after a series of calls involving the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Turkey and Pakistan's military chief.
Separate Call with Israeli Prime Minister
Trump also confirmed he held a separate, concurrent call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the framework, which he described as having gone “very well.” The deal is expected to reduce tensions in the region and stabilize oil markets, which have been volatile due to ongoing conflicts.
The announcement marks a significant shift in U.S.-Iran relations, which have been fraught with tension over the past years. Critics have expressed skepticism, but supporters hail it as a major diplomatic victory for the Trump administration.
