At the funeral of Iran’s assassinated supreme leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Sunday, mourners called for the killing of US President Donald Trump. Khamenei was killed along with other family members on the first day of the US-Israeli war on 28 February, and his funeral was delayed due to the conflict.
The ceremony at Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla saw large crowds waving Iranian flags and red vengeance banners. Poet Mohammad Rasouli declared: “From now on the shroud is our garment. I swear by your blood; Trump’s murder is our responsibility.” His remarks drew cheers from the crowd.
Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, remained absent from public view, not attending his wife’s funeral or his father’s ceremony. His three brothers stood beside the coffin. Officials say Mojtaba was injured in the attacks but has no permanent disfigurement.
Senior Iranian officials attended, including al-Quds force commander Esmail Qaani and IRGC commander Ahmad Vahidi, suggesting a ceasefire with the US precluded an attack on the event. However, US commentators described the funeral as a “target-rich environment” and an “opportunity lost”.
