Trump Hails Lebanon Ceasefire as 'Historic Day' Amid Iran War Developments
US President Donald Trump has declared it a "historic day for Lebanon" as a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect, following weeks of heavy Israeli bombing campaigns targeting Hezbollah positions. The truce, which began early Friday morning local time, marks a significant pause in hostilities that could influence broader peace efforts in the region.
Trump's Optimistic Statements on Lebanon and Iran War
In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump expressed optimism about the ceasefire, stating, "Good things are happening" without elaborating further. He earlier wrote, "I hope Hezbollah acts nicely and well during this important period of time. It will be a GREAT moment for them if they do. No more killing. Must finally have PEACE!" Trump also hinted at "historic" developments in Lebanon, suggesting that "May have been a historic day for Lebanon. Good things are happening!!!"
The US president revealed he had held "excellent conversations" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, planning to invite both to the White House for "meaningful talks." Despite the ceasefire, Trump downplayed economic impacts, insisting the US economy is booming despite "our little diversion" to Iran, and claimed inflation caused by the war is "fake."
Israeli and Lebanese Reactions to the Ceasefire
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the ceasefire "to advance" peace efforts with Lebanon, stating, "We have an opportunity to make a historic peace agreement with Lebanon." However, he clarified that the ceasefire does not involve a withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, where troops remain "in the face of Hezbollah’s ongoing terrorist activities," according to military spokesman Avichay Adraee.
In Lebanon, President Joseph Aoun welcomed the agreement, though the Lebanese state is not an active party in the conflict. The Lebanese Army reported that citizens fired weapons into the air after the ceasefire took effect, warning against this "dangerous phenomenon" and promising to pursue offenders. Additionally, the Army accused Israel of breaking the ceasefire shortly after it began, citing "several Israeli attacks recorded" and intermittent shelling.
Hezbollah's Stance and Military Actions
Hezbollah, the militant group targeted by Israel, stated that any truce must apply "across all Lebanese territory and must not allow the Israeli enemy any freedom of movement." In the 24 hours leading up to the ceasefire, Hezbollah claimed it carried out 56 military operations, while the Israeli military reported striking 380 Hezbollah targets, according to The New York Times.
Amit Sofer, head of the Merom HaGalil Regional Council in northern Israel, criticized the ceasefire, calling it "worse" than the status quo of fighting. He argued that Trump's linkage of the Lebanese and Iranian arenas "condemns northern residents to more years of a constant threat."
International and Economic Implications
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire, expressing hope it "will pave the way for negotiations towards a long-term solution to the conflict & contribute to ongoing efforts toward a lasting & comprehensive peace in the region."
Economically, oil prices fell below $100 a barrel as investors grew cautiously optimistic about a near-term resolution to the Middle East war, despite the Strait of Hormuz remaining closed after Iran effectively shut it following US and Israeli strikes. Brent crude futures dropped to $98.14 a barrel, and US West Texas Intermediate fell to $93.15. Asian stocks showed strong gains, with MSCI's Asia-Pacific index up 14.5% in April after a March drop, nearly returning to pre-war levels.
Inflation in the US surged 0.9% since February, driven by a 21.2% rise in gas prices in March due to the Strait of Hormuz closure. Trump dismissed this as "fake inflation," but the national average gas price has exceeded $4 per gallon.
Ceasefire Details and Future Prospects
The 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon could boost attempts to extend peace efforts involving Iran, the US, and Israel. Trump suggested the next US-Iran meeting might occur over the weekend when the current ceasefire expires. As the region watches closely, the truce represents a fragile step toward de-escalation in a conflict that has seen significant military action and economic disruption.
