Zelensky says 20-minute Vatican meeting saved Trump relationship

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that his fraught relationship with Donald Trump was salvaged during a brief 20-minute conversation at the Vatican in April 2025.

In an interview with right-wing US activist Laura Loomer released on Thursday, Zelensky described how the tone between the two leaders shifted dramatically after their encounter at St Peter's Basilica.

“We had our first changing moment in Rome, at the Vatican. It was not a long meeting, but I always said that I think it was a historic moment, because we changed the relationship in 15, 20 minutes,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader acknowledged the February 2025 Oval Office meeting with Trump had been tense and confrontational. Loomer, who had previously been a staunch critic of Ukraine, asked how the pair's relationship had since evolved.
