Ruth Jones Declines Strictly Come Dancing, Citing No Price Tag for Participation
Ruth Jones: No Money Could Make Me Do Strictly Come Dancing

Ruth Jones Rules Out Strictly Come Dancing Appearance

Ruth Jones, the celebrated Welsh actor and co-creator of the hit sitcom Gavin & Stacey, has made it clear that no financial incentive could persuade her to participate in the BBC's popular dancing competition, Strictly Come Dancing. The 59-year-old star, best known for her iconic role as Nessa Jenkins, expressed her unwavering disinterest during a recent television interview.

Unequivocal Stance on Strictly

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, Jones acknowledged the impressive talents displayed by contestants on Strictly Come Dancing but remained adamant about her personal stance. "I've been and watched Strictly and it is amazing what people do," she stated. "But it is absolutely not for me. They would have to pay me an absolutely ridiculous amount of money – there isn't a figure." This definitive declaration underscores her commitment to avoiding the dance floor spotlight, regardless of potential monetary offers.

Rejection of Celebrity Traitors

In addition to Strictly, Jones revealed that she had been approached to appear on another BBC reality game show, Celebrity Traitors. Despite her fondness for the programme, she explained her preference for viewing it from the comfort of her home. "There was a big rumour about me doing it as well," she said. "The thing is I had sort of been asked about doing it and I love the show and I think it's amazing, but then I thought I'll have to put on a wet suit and I'll have to go in one of them lochs, I'll get bitten by the midges. I'd rather sit in my pyjamas and watch everyone else." This humorous yet firm refusal highlights her desire to avoid the physical challenges and discomfort associated with such productions.

Insights into Gavin & Stacey Dynamics

Jones, who won a Bafta in 2025 for best female performance in a comedy for her role in Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, also provided intriguing details about the on-screen relationship between her character Nessa and Smithy, played by James Corden. In the Christmas special, the pair were set to marry but notably never shared a kiss. Jones clarified the reasoning behind this creative choice: "James Corden and I couldn't bear the thought of kissing each other, so that was kind of written into the script. We're like brother and sister, so it would've been strange." This revelation offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at the actors' camaraderie and the show's narrative decisions.

The Jonathan Ross Show, featuring this interview, airs on Saturday at 10pm on ITV1 and ITVX, providing viewers with further insights into Jones's career and personal perspectives.
