Russia Vetoes UN Resolution on Ukraine as Putin's Forces Intensify Attacks
Russia vetoes UN resolution on Ukraine war

In a move that has drawn widespread international condemnation, Russia has exercised its veto power at the United Nations Security Council to block a resolution that denounced its ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The vote, held in New York, saw Russia stand alone in its opposition, with China choosing to abstain.

The failed resolution sought to reaffirm Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity while specifically criticising Moscow's recent escalation of military operations in the northeastern Kharkiv region. This new offensive has triggered one of the largest and most rapid civilian displacements of the conflict, with thousands fleeing intense shelling.

A Lone Veto Amidst Global Condemnation

Of the Security Council's 15 members, 13 voted in favour of the resolution. Russia, as a permanent member, wielded its power to unilaterally strike it down. China's abstention, a recurring pattern since the war began, effectively provided diplomatic cover for Moscow's actions.

British Ambassador to the UN, Dame Barbara Woodward, did not mince words in her response. She stated the resolution's purpose was to "hold Russia to account for its continued aggression and for the suffering it is inflicting on the Ukrainian people". She emphasised that the veto would not silence the overwhelming global consensus against the invasion.

Kharkiv Endures Relentless Assault

The diplomatic stalemate in New York stands in stark contrast to the brutal reality on the ground in Ukraine's second-largest city. Russian forces are relentlessly shelling Kharkiv and its surrounding villages, reportedly using guided aerial bombs to devastate residential areas and critical infrastructure.

Local authorities report a dire humanitarian situation, with emergency services struggling to cope. The assault has severely damaged power stations, leaving many without electricity and compounding the misery for civilians trapped in the conflict zone.

The Global Response

In the wake of the veto, Western leaders have pledged to intensify their support for Ukraine. The discussion now turns to further military aid and the potential use of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's defence. The message from its allies is clear: Russia's veto at the UN will not translate to victory on the battlefield.
