A Russian drone struck a 10-storey apartment building in Galati, Romania, during an overnight attack on neighbouring Ukraine, injuring two people and prompting widespread international condemnation. The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, marks a significant escalation as it directly impacted a Nato member state.
Nato and US Respond
Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte condemned Russia's "reckless behaviour" and reiterated the alliance's commitment to defend "every inch of Allied territory." US Ambassador Matthew Whitaker echoed these sentiments, warning of serious consequences for such aggression. Both leaders stressed that the attack underscores the need for continued vigilance and support for Ukraine.
Romania Takes Diplomatic Action
In response, Romania announced it would expel the Russian consul and close its consulate in Constanta. The Romanian government described the drone strike as a grave violation of its sovereignty and Nato airspace, calling for a coordinated alliance response.
UK Condemns and Unveils New Laws
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer denounced the drone incident as a "serious violation of Nato airspace." The UK government plans to introduce new legislation imposing jail sentences on saboteurs who damage undersea internet cables, a move aimed at deterring Russian interference in critical infrastructure.
Russia's War Spending Soars
Russia's Finance Minister Anton Siluanov indicated that the country expects to overspend by at least $28 billion on its war in Ukraine this year, with projections of further significant overspends in 2027 and 2028. This highlights the mounting economic strain of the prolonged conflict.
Ukrainian and Hungarian Reactions
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned that the drone incursion into Romania demonstrates a broader threat to the Black Sea region and the European continent. Hungary's Prime Minister Peter Magyar also condemned the attack, stressing the importance of European unity in the face of Russian aggression.
The incident has galvanized Nato allies to reaffirm their collective defence commitments, with discussions underway for enhanced air defence measures along the eastern flank.
