Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page has directly addressed the persistent rumours that he is in line to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond. The 38-year-old actor described finding the intense speculation surrounding his potential casting as the iconic spy "strange" and "not normal" during a recent interview with Esquire UK.
The Pressure of Bond Speculation
Page, who became a household name following his breakout role as Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings in Netflix's period drama Bridgerton, has emerged as one of the leading contenders to take over the 007 mantle since Daniel Craig stepped down from the franchise in 2021. The actor revealed how he navigates the constant questioning about his Bond prospects, stating: "How I navigate it is very much about what is useful, what serves me in my job, in being able to deliver what I need to deliver to an audience, and a lot of that is just grounding."
He elaborated on the psychological impact of the speculation, noting: "It does get quite loud on the inside, like it was very, very intense, that combination of conversation, and I think I worked quite consciously to be able to navigate that environment with some normalcy for myself."
Current Betting Odds and Fan Expectations
According to current bookmakers' odds, Regé-Jean Page stands at 4/1 to be announced as the new James Bond, with many fans hoping that 2026 will finally reveal who will portray the legendary British spy in the next instalment. The betting landscape remains highly fluid, with Jacob Elordi recently emerging as another favourite following his acclaimed performance in the romance adaptation Wuthering Heights.
The list of potential Bond candidates continues to evolve, with other names frequently mentioned including Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba, Theo James, Jonathan Bailey, James Norton, Jack Lowden, and Henry Cavill. As of now, only a director has been officially attached to the upcoming Bond project, with Dune's acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve signed on to direct and serve as executive producer alongside Tanya Lapointe.
Franchise Evolution and Creative Changes
The James Bond franchise has historically been known for lengthy hiatuses between films, most notably the six-year gap between 1989's Licence to Kill (the final Timothy Dalton film) and 1995's GoldenEye (which introduced Pierce Brosnan as 007). For decades, the iconic British film series maintained tight creative control within the Barbara Broccoli family, who have produced the films since the first Bond movie in 1962.
However, a significant shift occurred last year when the Broccoli family handed over creative control to Amazon MGM Studios, which was formed when Amazon acquired Bond's parent studio in 2022. This marks the first major change in the franchise's creative leadership in over thirty years.
Page's Upcoming Projects and Personal Reflections
Fans can next see Regé-Jean Page in the romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany alongside Halle Bailey, scheduled for release on April 10. Directed by Kat Coiro, the film stars Bailey as Anna, a young cook who impulsively squats in a vacant Italian villa, with Page playing Michael, the owner's cousin.
The actor shared his thoughts on the film's themes, stating: "There is something about these grown-up kids who don't have their own parents, but who have found adopted family and eventually find each other. [There is a] three-dimensional human core and that's hopefully what will pull you through a very fun and frivolous ride with some integrity."
Page also reflected on the significance of the film's casting, adding: "I think it's important to normalise your own existence. To normalise seeing two Black leads in a film that is about a universal experience of escaping to find true love in Italy."
During his Esquire UK photoshoot, the actor showcased his modelling prowess, wearing a brown £1,660 top with matching trousers and loafers from Brioni, demonstrating the same sophisticated style that has made him a favourite among Bond speculation circles.
