Sarah Palin has offered to help monitor Russia amid ongoing concerns over its alleged interference in the US presidential election. The former Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate took to Twitter to respond to reports that Russian hackers attempted to aid Donald Trump’s campaign.
“Russia’s getting out of hand? So says the defeated,” she wrote. “Remember, I can keep an eye on them from here.” The comment references her much-ridiculed 2008 claim that she had foreign policy experience because Alaska is close to Russia.
During the 2008 campaign, Palin told ABC News: “They’re our next-door neighbours. And you can actually see Russia, from land, here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.” The remark was widely criticised as evidence of her lack of foreign policy credentials.
Palin later pointed to a 2008 prediction that Russia would invade Ukraine if Barack Obama were elected. After the 2014 annexation of Crimea, she boasted about her foresight, saying: “Yes, I could see this one from Alaska. I’m usually not one to Told-Ya-So, but I did.”
President-elect Trump has dismissed the CIA findings as “another excuse” for Democrats to explain Hillary Clinton’s defeat.
