Czech police have launched a thorough investigation into a violent incident targeting a Russian cultural centre in Prague, after an unknown assailant threw multiple Molotov cocktails at the building. The attack occurred late on Thursday evening in the Czech capital, with authorities confirming that the structure, known as the Russian House, did not catch fire despite the assault.
Details of the Prague Incident
According to official statements released on Friday, the perpetrator hurled several incendiary devices at the centre, which promotes Russian culture and history. Police reported that three of the six Molotov cocktails failed to explode, potentially limiting the damage. Photographic evidence from the scene shows a broken window, with two other windows and a section of the wall partially blackened by smoke residue.
Response from Russian and Czech Authorities
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova strongly condemned the attack, labelling it as "a barbaric act" in comments relayed by the state news agency Tass. In response, the Russian embassy in Prague has formally requested that Czech authorities enhance security measures for Russian institutions and their employees within the country.
Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar echoed the condemnation, describing the assault as "unacceptable" and underscoring the seriousness with which local officials are treating the case. The centre's director, Igor Girenko, provided additional context, noting the facility's role in organising cultural, educational, and scientific programmes, including Russian language courses.
Background on the Targeted Centre
The building, funded by the Russian state but lacking diplomatic status, serves as a hub for promoting Russian heritage. Despite its non-diplomatic standing, the attack has raised tensions, with investigations ongoing to identify the attacker and motives. Police are examining all evidence, including the remnants of the Molotov cocktails, to piece together the events of Thursday night.
This incident highlights ongoing geopolitical sensitivities in the region, as authorities work to ensure the safety of such cultural institutions while maintaining public order. The Czech police have not released further details on potential suspects, but the probe continues as they seek to bring the perpetrator to justice.
