Love Island Star Anna Vakili Blasts Show's Toxic Turn and Inauthentic Romances
Former Love Island star Anna Vakili has launched a scathing critique of the popular reality dating programme, asserting that it has significantly deteriorated since her participation in 2019. The influencer, who rose to fame on the show's fifth series, contends that the current iteration has become overly toxic and riddled with fabricated relationships.
Oversaturation and Diminished Authenticity
Vakili attributes the show's decline primarily to its increased broadcast frequency. She argues that airing both winter and summer editions annually has led to oversaturation, making the programme feel excessive and less special. "When it was just once a year, you had the whole year to look forward to it," Vakili explained. "Now, as soon as it's over, the next one is up, and so many people were going up for it and were coming out and were just irrelevant."
She further elaborated that this shift has eroded the authenticity that once characterised the show. According to Vakili, contestants now predominantly join to boost their social media followings rather than genuinely seek love. "Now, it's just pure going on there, fake relationships, and that's what it is," she stated, contrasting this with earlier seasons where participants had a more balanced mix of motivations.
Increased Tension and Toxicity
Vakili also highlighted a rise in pre-existing tensions among contestants, which she believes fuels a toxic environment. She pointed out that many entrants now know each other from outside the villa, whether through shared management, public events, or past romantic entanglements. "I think it is getting very toxic right now because like all are going in there and they know each other from the outside," Vakili remarked, suggesting this dynamic introduces unnecessary drama and conflict.
Reflecting on her own experience during the fifth series, where she was coupled with Sharif Lanre, Jordan Hames, and Ovie Soko before being eliminated on day 52, Vakili noted a stark contrast. She believes the show's quality began to wane notably after the COVID-19 pandemic, with the dual annual editions accelerating its downturn.
Post-Show Success and Sisterly Bond
Since her time on Love Island, Anna Vakili has successfully transitioned into a full-time influencer career. She co-hosts the popular Sisters in the City podcast with her younger sister, Mandi, amassing over one million combined followers on social media. The duo credits their strong sibling relationship to their upbringing, where their parents emphasised maintaining a close bond and resolving conflicts swiftly.
"I don't think there's a secret to it," Anna said regarding their sisterly connection. "It's just because of the way... my mom and dad brought us up was like we weren't even allowed to have a fallout. So it's like it just kind of is instilled in us." Mandi added that their mother would playfully threaten to disown them during childhood arguments, prompting immediate reconciliation.
New Makeup Collaboration
Capitalising on their influencer status, the sisters have recently partnered with beauty brand Adored By to launch a makeup collection. The line features bold lip and brow kits designed to reflect their signature glamorous looks. Anna described the collaboration as "an exciting creative journey," while Mandi noted it feels "so personal to us," with every product chosen to recreate their daily styles.
The Adored By Anna and Mandi collection is currently available online, marking another milestone in their post-Love Island entrepreneurial ventures. Despite her criticisms of the show, Vakili's career exemplifies how former contestants can leverage their reality TV fame into sustainable business opportunities beyond the villa.
