Kyiv has declared a day of mourning following a devastating Russian aerial attack that claimed at least 21 lives, including children, and destroyed an apartment block in the Ukrainian capital. The assault, which involved ballistic and cruise missiles, marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Zelensky Condemns Escalation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russia employed both ballistic and cruise missiles in the strike. He also revealed that since Wednesday, Russian forces have launched more than 1,560 drones against Ukrainian population centres, with Kyiv being a primary target. The attack has drawn widespread international condemnation.
International Response
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz strongly criticised Russia's actions, stating that Vladimir Putin is "banking on escalation rather than negotiation." Merz emphasised that such attacks contradict any claims of seeking an end to the war. In response, UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced an acceleration of British deliveries of air defence and counter-drone systems to Ukraine, describing the attacks as "shocking."

Separately, a Ukrainian drone attack killed three people in the central Russian city of Ryazan. Meanwhile, North Korea condemned UK sanctions imposed over a summer camp allegedly involved in the deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange strikes.
