Kelvin Fletcher Reveals 'Bittersweet' Farm Update Following Heartbreaking Goodbye
Kelvin Fletcher has shared a poignant and 'bittersweet' update from his farm, marking the conclusion of series four of Fletcher's Family Farm. The final episode, which aired on Sunday, featured Kelvin and his wife Liz reflecting on a year filled with both triumphs and tribulations on their Cheshire farm.
A Season of Mixed Fortunes on the Farm
In a voiceover during the episode, Kelvin described the winter as 'a season of mixed fortune'. He highlighted a significant milestone: the first of their cattle being sent to produce organic meat. However, this achievement was overshadowed by the sudden and unexpected loss of a cow named Cherry, who passed away due to pneumonia.
Kelvin expressed the emotional weight of this event, stating that any joy was dimmed by Cherry's death. He emphasised the learning curve of farming life, noting, 'We're learning to deal with the highs and lows of farming life.' The episode also captured a hopeful moment as vet Hugo arrived to conduct a pregnancy test on another cow, Ruby, potentially heralding a new chapter for their herd.
Emotional Highs and Lows with the Herd
The pregnancy test held particular significance for Kelvin, as earlier in the series, Ruby had suffered a miscarriage. Kelvin explained the impact of this setback: 'That miscarriage kind of puts you back. You lose two or three months, and suddenly you're at the back end of summer, then, and it has a knock-on effect.' Despite this, Ruby had previously produced award-winning calves, including a bull calf named Ray and a heifer named Elizabeth.
When the scan revealed that Ruby was 11 weeks pregnant, Kelvin was overjoyed. He beamed, 'Brilliant, Ruby. It's good to get an idea of how her recovery is. She had a second calf in September, and three months later, she's back in calf, so that's a good sign.' However, he admitted the news was bittersweet, reflecting on Cherry's absence.
Looking Forward After a Heartbreaking Loss
Kelvin candidly shared his mixed feelings, saying, 'It's bittersweet to be honest. You know, it is really good, but bittersweet. Obviously, we lost Cherry, so there should have been two cows.' He imagined Cherry would have been two months ahead in pregnancy, leading to a sense of loss amidst the celebration.
To move forward, Kelvin revealed plans to expand the herd, stating, 'We just need to get another cow, don't we? We need to replace the cherry. So I'm already on the lookout for some more cows and more cows who are already in calf.' This forward-looking attitude underscores the resilience required in farming, balancing grief with hope for the future.
Fletcher's Family Farm is available to watch on ITVX, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into the challenges and joys of rural life.
