The President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, has commenced a three-day official visit to the United Kingdom, during which she is expected to meet King Charles III. This marks her first official trip to England since her inauguration in November, where she emphasized her commitment to connecting with the Irish diaspora.
Visit Highlights
Ms Connolly's itinerary began on Monday with a visit to the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, west London. There, she delivered an address and observed an Irish language class, as well as musical and dance performances. Later in the evening, the Irish ambassador to Britain, Martin Fraser, and his wife Deirdre Fraser hosted a reception at the Irish embassy in London in honour of President Connolly and her husband, Brian McEnery.
Engagements with the Royal Family
The president is also expected to meet King Charles during her visit, though details of the engagement have not been disclosed. This meeting underscores the strong diplomatic ties between Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Continuing the Visit
On Tuesday, President Connolly will attend the Chelsea Flower Show and visit the London Irish Centre in Camden. The final day of her trip, Wednesday, will see her travel to Leeds, where she will visit Leeds University and the Leeds Irish Centre. She will receive a briefing on the work of the Irish Health Centre in Leeds and meet representatives of other Irish centres in the region.
Context of the Visit
This is President Connolly's third official overseas visit since taking office, following trips to Northern Ireland and Spain. The visit aims to strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties, particularly through engagement with the Irish community in the UK, which numbers over 500,000 people.
