Infantino's Handshake Attempt Backfires at FIFA Congress

FIFA President Gianni Infantino's attempt to orchestrate a handshake between the heads of the Israeli and Palestinian football federations at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver backfired dramatically.

Refusal and Reaction

Jibril Rajoub, president of the Palestinian football federation, refused to stand next to Basim Sheikh Suliman, the Israel FA vice-president. Rajoub shouted “we are suffering” to the crowd, later explaining that he could not shake hands with someone representing a “fascist and racist government.” He also criticised Israel’s actions in the region.

Speeches and Sanctions

Earlier, Rajoub used his speech to criticise FIFA's decision not to sanction Israel over football clubs located in West Bank settlements. In contrast, Suliman advocated for football to build bridges between the two sides.

Infantino's Response

Infantino responded by expressing hope for a future 'beautiful' Under-15s tournament featuring both countries. He emphasised the importance of unity and giving hope to children, despite the failed handshake attempt.

The incident highlights the deep political tensions that continue to affect football diplomacy in the region.
