UK Shadow Defence Secretary Warns Against Trump's NATO Stance Amid Rising Global Tensions
Healey Warns of Trump's NATO Threat to UK Security

Labour's Shadow Defence Secretary, John Healey, has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of Donald Trump's possible return to the White House, particularly regarding NATO's future. Speaking ahead of the NATO summit in Washington, Healey emphasised the need for the UK to strengthen its defence relationships with European allies, regardless of the US election outcome.

A Call for Stronger European Defence Ties

Healey stressed that the UK must not rely solely on the US for its security, especially given Trump's controversial remarks about NATO. "We cannot take America's role in NATO for granted," he said, highlighting the importance of bolstering European defence cooperation.

Trump's NATO Comments Spark Concern

Trump's previous statements suggesting he would encourage Russia to act against NATO members who fail to meet defence spending targets have raised alarms. Healey described these comments as "deeply irresponsible" and a threat to global stability.

Labour's Defence Strategy

Healey outlined Labour's commitment to maintaining the UK's nuclear deterrent and increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP, contingent on economic conditions. He also reaffirmed support for Ukraine, stating that Labour would continue to provide military aid if elected.

The Shadow Defence Secretary's remarks come as global tensions rise, with conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East underscoring the need for a united Western defence strategy.
