Gosling and Padilla Break Character on SNL After Script Change

Ryan Gosling struggled to keep a straight face during his fourth time hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, after a last-minute script change caught him and cast member Ashley Padilla off guard.

The 45-year-old actor, currently promoting his new sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, repeatedly broke character in a sketch where they played a school principal and teacher intercepting notes passed by students. A prompt on screen revealed the notes had been altered since rehearsal, meaning both were reading the jokes for the first time live.

One note described Principal Wit missing 133 layups in a row, while others referenced Padilla's character asking Chat GPT for makeover tips and an embarrassing trip to the gynaecologist. Both actors dissolved into laughter multiple times.

Gosling admitted on The Tonight Show that he often gets told he laughs too much on SNL. Show creator Lorne Michaels typically prefers performers to stay in character, but exceptions are made for Gosling, who is known for struggling to keep his composure.

Elsewhere on the episode, 'Weekend Update' host Colin Jost mocked Timothée Chalamet for claiming 'no one cares' about opera and ballet, noting the comment was made during a press tour for a film about ping-pong.
