Costco parking lot gets concrete barriers, shoppers joke about military base
Costco parking lot gets concrete barriers, shoppers joke

A Costco warehouse in Washington, DC, has implemented major changes to its parking lot, and customers were quick to mock the new industrial aesthetic. The location added large concrete barriers near the entrance, with shopping carts positioned between each barricade, as shown in a now-viral social media post comparing the setup to a military base.

Reason for the barriers

According to shoppers, the parking lot originally featured a two-way road, but due to the store's popularity, the small area became excessively congested with cars entering and exiting. Any vehicle pulling out of a parking spot would cause a backlog. To address this, the store switched to one-way streets and added concrete barriers along with painted arrows, effectively closing off half of the lane. Now, cars drive to the end of the parking lane and snake through another part of the lot to exit.

Customer reactions

Some shoppers joked about the compound-like setup, comparing it to a military base, a bunker, and other similar structures. One Reddit user wrote, 'Planning for next toilet paper shortage,' while another commented on preparing for the next shipment of Pokemon cards. However, a Reddit user who claims to shop at this location said they 'appreciate' the barriers as an attempt to fix traffic flow. Despite the unconventional appearance, the shopper noted that the parking lot is not 'chaotic' or 'crazy.' They added, 'They used to have cones up, but moving to concrete barriers is not a bad idea because there will inevitably be some Maryland driver who will run over the cones. I’ve never seen a Costco parking lot run as smoothly as this one.'

Other Costco parking lot changes

This is not the only Costco location undergoing a parking lot refresh. In Bellevue, Wisconsin, temporary concrete blocks have been placed near an intersection leading into the warehouse. Drivers traveling in either direction will only be allowed to make right-hand turns, with a permanent barrier expected to be installed in the fall. For some shoppers, the parking lot remains a significant drawback. One Reddit user commented, 'I never understood why Costco cannot figure out their parking lots. Any major department chain, like Walmart, Kroger and Meijer has a simple open lot and it's nowhere near the sheer chaos that Costco is.'

Costco's popularity

Despite parking lot challenges, Costco remains one of the most popular retail stores, surpassing rivals like Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale in memberships. Membership fees are $65 per year for Gold Star/Business memberships and $130 per year for Executive memberships, which include access to food courts and gas stations. Costco is also opening its first standalone gas station in Mission Viejo, California, scheduled for June 2026, exclusively for members.
