Timothée Chalamet Criticised for Dismissing Ballet and Opera as Unpopular Arts
Chalamet Slammed for Ballet and Opera 'No One Cares' Comments

Timothée Chalamet Faces Backlash Over Ballet and Opera Remarks

Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet has sparked significant controversy after making dismissive comments about ballet and opera during a recent interview. The 30-year-old actor, known for roles in films like Wonka and Dune, stated he prefers not to work in arts that require active preservation, claiming "no one cares about it" anymore.

Chalamet's Controversial Statements in Variety Interview

In a candid conversation with fellow actor Matthew McConaughey for Variety magazine, Chalamet expressed his artistic philosophy. "I admire people, and I've done it myself, doing a talk show about how we've got to keep movie theatres alive, you know, we've got to keep this genre alive," he explained. "And another part of me feels like, if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they're going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it."

The actor then made the remarks that would ignite the backlash: "And I don't want to be working in ballet or opera or, you know, things where it's like, 'hey, keep this thing alive', even though no one cares about this any more." Chalamet added, "All respect to the ballet and opera people out there, I just lost 14 cents in viewership, I just took shots for no reason."

Outcry from Ballet and Opera Communities

The comments prompted immediate criticism from professionals within the ballet and opera industries, particularly on social media platforms. American opera singer Isabel Leonard responded sharply, expressing her disappointment with Chalamet's perspective.

"Honestly, I'm shocked that someone so seemingly successful can be so ineloquent and narrow-minded in his views about art while considering himself as an artist as I would only imagine one would as an actor," Leonard wrote. "To take cheap shots at fellow artists says more in this interview than anything else he could say. Shows a lot about his character."

She continued: "You don't have to like all art but only a weak person/artist feels the need to diminish in fact, the very arts that would inspire those who are interested in slowing down, to do exactly that."

Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny echoed similar sentiments in another comment: "What a disappointing take. There is nothing more impressive than the magic of live theatre, ballet and opera. We should be trying to uplift these art forms, these artists and come together across disciplines to do that. The impact of these mediums are long, long-lasting and life-changing."

Revelations About Chalamet's On-Set Lifestyle

The controversy comes alongside revelations about Chalamet's pampered lifestyle during the filming of Wonka. Comedian Tom Davis, who co-starred in the film, shared details on the Parenting Hell podcast about the actor's privileged treatment.

"One thing that ground my gears – he had a personal chef," Davis revealed. "And we were having quite ropey breakfasts. I got to know his personal chef quite a bit and I said, 'What are you cooking this morning?' He said, 'I do three different things for Tim, and he'll have one thing.' And Timothée turned around and went, 'Hey man, why don't you have the other two things?'"

Chalamet's Relationship with Kylie Jenner

Separately, details have emerged about Chalamet's long-term relationship with reality star and entrepreneur Kylie Jenner. The couple have been dating for over three years and reportedly live together, with marriage being a consideration according to a Daily Mail source.

Insiders revealed in early 2025 that Jenner and Chalamet have agreed to a set of stipulations regarding their relationship. While the couple only started attending public events together more than two years into their relationship, they have maintained privacy by not posting about each other online.

When profiled in a November cover story for Vogue, Chalamet declined to discuss the relationship, establishing a boundary by saying he "will not talk about it," though clarifying, "I don’t say that with any fear, I just don’t have anything to say."

However, at the 2026 Critics' Choice Awards in January, Chalamet made his most open profession about his girlfriend during his acceptance speech. "Thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation. I love you. I couldn't do this without you," he effused, marking a rare public acknowledgment of their relationship.
