Britney Spears' recent DUI arrest has left her family worried but reluctant to intervene, fearing backlash from the Free Britney movement, sources have revealed. The 44-year-old pop star was arrested on Wednesday night under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs after her BMW was reported driving erratically at high speed on a California motorway.
An insider told the Daily Mail that family members feel unable to step in, despite describing the situation as 'life or death'. 'We're worried, of course, but at some point what can we even do? Everyone in this family got a lot of s*** because of the conservatorship and we still get a lot of s***, but this wasn't happening when she was being watched,' the source said.
The Free Britney movement, a fan-led campaign that highlighted the singer's conservatorship, led to her being freed from the legal arrangement in 2019. However, since then, her behaviour has become increasingly erratic. The insider added: 'She needs help and hopefully this is a wake-up call. Her entire family adores her and loves her so much. No one wants to see her fail, no one wants her to get hurt.'
Britney was placed under the conservatorship in 2008, with her father Jamie controlling her personal affairs and finances. She later described the order as 'abusive' and said it dictated everything from the colour of her cabinets to who she could befriend. After the conservatorship ended, she claimed it was 'premeditated' and that there were no drugs or alcohol in her system at the time it began.
A representative for Britney previously described the arrest as 'completely inexcusable' and expressed hope that it would encourage her to seek help. Her family said they were relieved nobody was hurt by her alleged driving under the influence.
