Wawrinka, Monfils Get French Open Wildcards in Final Season

Former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka has been awarded a main-draw wildcard for this year's Roland-Garros tournament, set to be his final appearance at the clay-court major. The Swiss player, who won the title in 2015, announced that the 2026 season will be his last before retirement.

Honours Planned for Farewell

Plans are in place to honour the 41-year-old after his final match in Paris, alongside home favourite Gael Monfils, who also received a wildcard and will retire at the end of the year. Monfils, a semi-finalist in 2008, is currently ranked 222nd in the world, while Wawrinka sits at 125th.

No Wildcard for Goffin

Belgian veteran David Goffin, who announced his retirement at the end of 2026, was not granted a main-draw wildcard. The 35-year-old, ranked 249th, received a wildcard into the qualifying tournament instead. Goffin reached a career-high ranking of seventh and won six ATP Tour titles, making the quarter-finals at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open.

Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, reached a career-high ranking of world No. 3. He famously defeated Rafael Nadal in the 2014 Australian Open final and Novak Djokovic in both the 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open finals. He also won an Olympic gold medal in men's doubles with Roger Federer at the 2008 Beijing Games and led Switzerland to the Davis Cup title in 2014.

Monfils, 39, is a two-time major semi-finalist, also reaching the last four at the 2016 US Open. He became the oldest ATP Tour title winner when he claimed his 13th career trophy in Auckland in 2025.

Other Wildcard Recipients

The remaining men's wildcards into the main draw went to Americans Nishesh Basavareddy and Australian Adam Walton, as part of reciprocal agreements with the US and Australian tennis federations. French players Titouan Droguet, Hugo Gaston, Arthur Gea, and Moise Kouame also received wildcards.

On the women's side, wildcards were awarded to Australia's Emerson Jones, American Akasha Urhobo, and French players Clara Burel, Ksenia Efremova, Fiona Ferro, Leolia Jeanjean, Sarah Rakotomanga, and Alice Tubello.

The French Open begins on 24 May.
