A major incident has been declared in Devon after the discovery of a large World War Two bomb forced the evacuation of up to 2,500 homes.
Major Incident Declared in Exmouth
The device, described by police as a 'very large WW2 German bomb', was found at Exmouth Marina on Wednesday, 15 January 2026. An initial 100-metre cordon was swiftly established, which was later extended to 400 metres and then again to 600 metres as a precaution.
This significant expansion meant residents from an additional 500 properties had to leave their homes, joining those who were evacuated the previous night. Police and council teams went door-to-door within the cordon to ensure everyone was informed and supported.
Community Support and Disruption
At least 40 people spent Wednesday night at the Exmouth LED Leisure Centre, which was set up as an Evacuation Assembly Point. Councillor Joe Whibley praised the staff from East Devon District Council, Exmouth Town Council, and LED Leisure for their efforts, stating they went "above and beyond" to care for those displaced.
The disruption was widespread. A school within the evacuation zone was closed, and residents expressed their anxiety on local community forums. One resident on St Andrews Road described the scene as "apocalyptic and very scary," having to leave pets behind after signing a disclaimer to briefly return to feed them.
Delicate Disposal Operation Planned
Following extensive advice from explosive ordnance disposal experts, a plan was formulated to safely neutralise the threat. Authorities stated the device is expected to be carefully transported to sea at high tide for disposal.
If the operation proceeds as planned, roads could begin to reopen by Friday morning, allowing residents to return home. Local MP David Reed thanked all emergency teams working in "very wet and challenging conditions" and praised the community spirit shown during the crisis.
Police have urged the public to stay away from the area and confirmed that multiple emergency services, including bomb disposal teams, remain on the scene managing what they have termed a major incident with significant impacts for the town.
