Ukraine and Romania Launch Drone Production Talks Under EU Funding Scheme
Ukrainian drone manufacturers are holding high-level meetings with Romanian defence ministry and army officials in Bucharest this week to explore potential joint production ventures. Strategic Partnership Amid Regional Security Threats
Romania, a key member of both the European Union and NATO, shares an extensive 650-kilometre land border with Ukraine. This proximity has placed Romania on the front lines of regional security challenges. Since Russia initiated attacks on Ukrainian ports located directly across the Danube River from Romanian territory, the country has experienced repeated incidents of drone incursions into its airspace and fragments falling on its soil. These events have underscored the urgent need for enhanced defence capabilities and closer cooperation with Ukraine.
EU's SAFE Initiative: A Financial Backbone for Rearmament
The European Union has allocated a substantial €16.6 billion to Romania under its newly established rearmament programme, known as SAFE (Strategic Armament Fund for Europe). This initiative is scheduled to commence operations later this year, providing a significant financial boost for defence projects across member states. Romanian Defence Minister Radu-Dinel Miruță has explicitly stated that the country intends to earmark €200 million from this fund specifically for joint drone production efforts with Ukrainian partners.
Expanding Collaboration with Ukrainian Industry Leaders
Fifteen Ukrainian companies specialising in drone manufacturing are participating in the ongoing discussions in Bucharest. These firms will continue to engage with Romanian officials over the coming days to refine project details and establish a framework for collaboration. The talks aim to harness Ukrainian expertise in drone technology, which has been proven in conflict scenarios, combined with Romanian industrial capacity and EU financial support to create a robust production pipeline.
