UK Issues Stark Warning to Putin Over Russian Submarine Activity
Defence Secretary John Healey has delivered a severe warning to Vladimir Putin, stating that any attempt to damage UK cables and pipelines will result in serious consequences. This declaration follows heightened Russian military operations in the Atlantic, where British and allied forces closely monitored suspicious submarine movements for an extended period.
Covert Operations Exposed and Deterred
According to Mr Healey, increased Russian activity involved an Akula-class nuclear submarine and two specialised Gugi submarines. The Akula vessel likely served as a decoy, while the Gugi submarines operated over critical underwater infrastructure. However, their covert mission was fully exposed and effectively deterred by vigilant UK forces.
British military assets, including a Royal Navy warship and RAF P8 aircraft, tracked the Russian submarines around the clock. This continuous surveillance ensured the Russian crews were aware their movements were not secret, prompting their eventual retreat from UK waters.
Broader Strategy Against Russian Shadow Fleet
This incident coincides with the UK's intensified efforts to target Russia's so-called shadow fleet of oil tankers. British forces have now received authorisation to board and halt sanctioned vessels in UK waters. This measure aims to cut off funding for Moscow's ongoing war in Ukraine, reinforcing the UK's commitment to countering Russian aggression.
The combined actions highlight a proactive defence posture, with the UK leveraging both military deterrence and economic sanctions to safeguard national security and support international stability.
