Jesy Nelson Shares Physio Snap with Twins Amid SMA Health Battle
Jesy Nelson's Twins Physio Snap Amid SMA Battle

Jesy Nelson has shared a heartwarming snapshot of herself providing physiotherapy to her twin daughters, Ocean and Story, during a park outing amid their ongoing battle with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1. The 34-year-old former Little Mix star posted the image on her Instagram story, showing the one-year-old girls lying on their backs while their mother helped them exercise to build leg muscle strength.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

In January, Jesy revealed that her twins were diagnosed with SMA Type 1, a rare genetic condition that causes muscle wasting. The late diagnosis means the girls are unlikely to ever walk and will require specialist breathing equipment at night and feeding tubes to eat. Despite a devastating prognosis that they may not live beyond the age of two, Jesy remains hopeful that they will defy the odds.

Treatment and Daily Struggles

Speaking on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast, Jesy explained that SMA is a muscle-wasting disease where the twins lack a common gene. Their muscles are deteriorating, affecting breathing and swallowing. Without timely treatment, the condition can be fatal before age two. Jesy emphasized that she has accepted the situation and is determined to make the best of it, calling her daughters the strongest and most resilient babies.

The daily medical procedures, including physiotherapy, are emotionally taxing. Jesy described feeling like she is hurting them when they cry and scream during treatments. She likened caring for the twins to an emotional rollercoaster, with some days being extremely difficult and others slightly better.

Family Support and Awareness

Jesy, who shares the twins with ex-boyfriend Zion, never anticipated such demanding care. She hopes to raise awareness about SMA through her Prime Video series, believing there is a reason to share their story. Despite the challenges, she remains committed to providing the best care and cherishing every moment.
