Starmer Axes Road Projects for Defence: Experts Furious

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that funding previously allocated for road projects will be redirected to defence spending, a move that has sparked outrage among road experts and politicians. The decision, which includes axing two new road projects in the East Midlands, is part of £700 million in savings identified by the Department for Transport (DfT). The DfT will also explore limited reductions to as-yet-uncommitted roads funding, further impacting UK road users.

Funding Cuts and Expert Reactions

The Treasury has assured that money for local authorities to repair potholes and road damage will remain in place. However, fears persist that the pledged £7.3 billion is insufficient against a backlog of £18.62 billion. David Giles, Chair of the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA), expressed disappointment, stating: "It is disappointing that capital funding for new road projects looks set to be cut, but it is vital that the Government honours the pledge made today to protect funding for local authorities to carry out much-needed road maintenance and pothole repairs." He added, "We understand that in an increasingly challenging world tough public funding decisions must be made. However, local roads in England and Wales are already in a woeful condition and face a backlog of repairs that now stands at a whopping £18.62 billion."

Political Backlash

East Midlands mayor Claire Ward also criticised the decision, while Reform MP Robert Jentick voiced fury, calling the disruption to important projects unacceptable. The Defence Investment Plan is expected to be one of Starmer's final acts before resigning as Prime Minister, with the Labour leadership race concluding this summer—potentially as early as July 20 if Andy Burnham remains the sole candidate.
