Poland has activated its air defence systems after a Russian missile breached its airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine. The incident, lasting 39 seconds, has triggered emergency NATO consultations as tensions escalate along the alliance's eastern flank.
Dramatic Airspace Violation
The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command confirmed the violation occurred near the village of Oserdów in Lublin Voivodeship. "The object entered Polish space around 4:23am and remained for 39 seconds," stated military officials. Radar tracking showed the missile penetrated about 2km into Polish territory before returning to Ukrainian airspace.
NATO's Rapid Response
The breach has prompted urgent discussions among NATO allies, with Poland's Foreign Ministry summoning the Russian ambassador. "We demand immediate explanations from Moscow," declared a government spokesperson. The incident comes exactly 16 months after a Russian strike killed two in Przewodów, eastern Poland.
Ukraine Under Heavy Fire
Meanwhile, Ukraine endured one of its most intense bombardments in weeks, with Russia launching:
- 57 missiles of various types
- Dozens of explosive drones
- Coordinated attacks on energy infrastructure
Ukrainian air defences intercepted 18 missiles and 25 drones, but strikes caused power outages in several regions. The assault marks Russia's third major air offensive against Ukraine's energy grid this spring.
