Russia launched a massive daytime drone assault on Ukraine on Wednesday, deploying more than 200 unmanned aerial vehicles in what officials described as one of the largest aerial attacks of the war. The barrage targeted critical infrastructure and residential areas across several regions, causing widespread power outages and damage.
Scale of the Attack
Ukrainian air force officials reported that Russian forces fired over 200 drones, including Iranian-designed Shahed models, in a coordinated attack that began in the morning and continued into the afternoon. Air defense systems intercepted a significant number of the drones, but many evaded defenses and struck their targets.
According to preliminary reports, the attack focused on energy facilities in central and western Ukraine, leading to emergency blackouts in several districts. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, a drone strike hit a power substation, cutting electricity to thousands of households. Similar incidents were reported in Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia regions.
Casualties and Damage
At least five people were injured in the attacks, including a child, as debris from intercepted drones fell on residential buildings. Emergency services extinguished fires at multiple locations, including a warehouse and a fuel depot. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault, stating that Russia is deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure to terrorize the population. He reiterated calls for Western allies to provide more advanced air defense systems to counter such attacks.
International Response
The United Nations condemned the drone strikes, emphasizing that attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law. The European Union and NATO also expressed solidarity with Ukraine, promising continued military and financial support.
Meanwhile, Russia's defense ministry claimed the strikes targeted Ukrainian military-industrial facilities, but provided no evidence to support this assertion. Independent analysts note that the pattern of attacks suggests a deliberate strategy to disrupt Ukraine's energy grid ahead of winter.
