A former US Air Force serviceman, reportedly battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), opened fire at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, leaving two dead—including the shooter.
The incident occurred on the Gulf Coast base, where the armed veteran gained unauthorised access before exchanging gunfire with security personnel. The assailant was later pronounced dead, along with one other victim.
Details of the Shooting
According to officials, the gunman—identified as a military veteran—bypassed security measures, sparking an immediate lockdown. Military police engaged the shooter, leading to a fatal confrontation.
"Our personnel acted swiftly to neutralise the threat," a base spokesperson stated. "Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy."
PTSD and Veteran Mental Health
The shooter’s history of PTSD has raised concerns over mental health support for veterans. Advocacy groups stress the need for better psychological care for those returning from service.
"This is a heartbreaking reminder of the invisible wounds many veterans carry," said a representative from a veterans’ support organisation. "Early intervention and consistent mental health resources are critical."
Investigation Underway
Authorities are probing how the gunman accessed the secure facility and whether prior warnings about his mental state were overlooked. The motive remains unclear.
Keesler Air Force Base, a key training site for the US military, has since reinforced security protocols while counselling services are being offered to personnel.
