Pentagon Reaffirms Legal Framework for Anthropic AI Deployment
The Pentagon's chief spokesman has strongly reiterated that the United States military intends to utilise Anthropic's artificial intelligence technology exclusively in lawful manners. This statement comes as a firm declaration that the Department of Defense will not permit the company to dictate operational limitations, with a crucial deadline looming this Friday to reach an agreement on its demands.
Commitment to Lawful Applications and Human Oversight
Sean Parnell emphasised on Thursday via social media that the Pentagon "has no interest in using AI to conduct mass surveillance of Americans (which is illegal) nor do we want to use AI to develop autonomous weapons that operate without human involvement." This aligns directly with Anthropic's own policies, which explicitly prohibit their AI models from being employed for such purposes. Notably, Anthropic remains the final major AI firm among its peers that has not yet supplied its technology to a newly established internal network within the U.S. military.
Parnell clarified that the Pentagon seeks to "use Anthropic's model for all lawful purposes" but did not elaborate on the specific details of what those applications might entail. He argued that broadening access to the technology is essential to prevent the company from "jeopardizing critical military operations." In a definitive tone, he added, "We will not let ANY company dictate the terms regarding how we make operational decisions."
Deadline and Potential Consequences
The situation escalated during a meeting on Tuesday between Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Military officials issued warnings that they could take several severe actions if an agreement is not reached. These potential measures include designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk, cancelling its existing contract, or invoking the Cold War-era Defense Production Act. This law would grant the military sweeping authority to utilise Anthropic's products, even without the company's approval.
In his Thursday post on X, Parnell referenced only two of these possible outcomes. He stated that Anthropic has "until 5:01 PM ET on Friday to decide." He further warned, "Otherwise, we will terminate our partnership with Anthropic and deem them a supply chain risk." Anthropic did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment on Thursday. Following Tuesday's meeting, the company released a statement indicating it was engaged in "continued good-faith conversations about our usage policy to ensure Anthropic can continue to support the government's national security mission in line with what our models can reliably and responsibly do."
