The Pentagon has implemented extraordinary restrictions against two high-profile Fox News personalities, effectively barring them from participating in official Defence Department press briefings and events.
According to internal documents obtained by The Independent, both Pete Hegseth and Tim Parlatore have been placed on a list that prevents them from receiving press credentials or invitations to Pentagon-hosted media engagements.
Behind the Media Ban
The restrictions appear to stem from concerns within the Defence Department about the commentators' roles beyond traditional journalism. Pete Hegseth, a former Army National Guard officer turned weekend host, and Tim Parlatore, a former Trump attorney who now serves as a legal analyst, have both maintained active roles outside their media positions.
Defence officials cited "operational security considerations" and the need to maintain "appropriate boundaries between government operations and media commentary" as justification for the unusual measures.
Freedom of the Press Concerns
Media freedom advocates have expressed alarm at the decision, questioning whether the Pentagon is overstepping by determining which journalists qualify for access based on their outside activities or political affiliations.
"This sets a dangerous precedent for how the government can control press access," said one media rights advocate who requested anonymity. "When government agencies start picking and choosing which media representatives get access based on their perceived biases, it undermines the entire concept of a free press."
Political Dimensions
The timing of these restrictions has raised eyebrows in media circles, particularly given both commentators' connections to conservative politics. Hegseth has been mentioned as a potential political candidate, while Parlatore previously represented former President Donald Trump in legal matters.
Critics argue the move could be perceived as politically motivated, though Defence Department officials maintain the decision was based solely on security and operational considerations.
The Pentagon has declined to comment on individual cases but reaffirmed its commitment to "transparent and timely communication with all legitimate media organisations."
