Royal Navy Sailor Denies Groping Shipmates, Claims 'Conspiracy' Over Personality

A Royal Navy sailor has denied groping male and female shipmates, asserting that the allegations are fabricated because she is perceived as 'loud and opinionated'. The court martial heard these claims at Bulford Military Court in Wiltshire, where Able Seaman Sian Dowsett, aged 25, faced seven counts of sexual assault.

Allegations of 'Opportunistic' Attacks on Warship

Prosecutors described a series of 'opportunistic' attacks involving four fellow servicemen and women aboard HMS Dauntless. The incidents reportedly included:

  • Pinching and squeezing of nipples, bottoms, breasts, and crotches.
  • Bottom slapping on multiple occasions.
  • Genital grabbing and inappropriate remarks.

Two male and two female colleagues reported these actions, with one male sailor allegedly being grabbed by the crotch and subjected to comments such as, 'I like my coffee how I like my men, big and strong'. AB Dowsett is also accused of slapping one man's bottom three separate times.

Defence Claims of False Accusations and Conspiracy

In her defence, AB Dowsett argued that the complaints stem from a 'conspiracy' against her. She suggested that one accuser fabricated allegations because she reported his best friend for purchasing cocaine in Colombia. During her testimony, she stated, 'Because I was loud and opinionated and I did my job and they all said I didn't get into trouble for things.'

She elaborated that rumours circulated about her on the ship, leading to dislike due to her confident demeanor. AB Dowsett claimed the conspiracy began when she transferred to HMS Drake, with former shipmates submitting false complaints out of animosity.

Specific Incidents and Denials

The alleged assaults started two weeks into HMS Dauntless's deployment. One incident involved slapping a fellow Able Seaman's bottom in the galley, which he described as leaving him 'stunned'. AB Dowsett denied this, linking it to the cocaine report.

Another accusation involved grabbing a petty officer's breasts and caressing her nipple while saying, 'do you like that baby girl?' AB Dowsett refuted this, stating she would never use such terminology. She also denied making suggestive comments to a male Leading Hand and pinching another sailor's nipple.

A further claim alleged she grabbed a sailor's 'penis and balls in her hands', witnessed by his friend. AB Dowsett dismissed this as part of a conspiracy, noting the accusers' close working and social relationship.

Prosecution's Perspective and Personal Details

Prosecutor Graham Coombes challenged her defence, suggesting she sexually assaulted anyone she fancied on the ship. AB Dowsett firmly denied any sexual attraction to those involved, asserting, 'I didn't fancy anybody onboard HMS Dauntless and I didn't sexually assault anybody.'

Despite this, she admitted to a consensual sexual relationship with a gunner on the ship, booked in a hotel room. During a police interview, she mentioned having 'bisexual tendencies' in the past but clarified this was in 2020, and she is now in a committed relationship with a man.

Ongoing Trial and Broader Implications

The trial continues, highlighting issues of conduct and accountability within the Royal Navy. The case underscores the complexities of addressing sexual assault allegations in military settings, where personal dynamics and workplace environments can influence testimonies.

AB Dowsett's defence hinges on characterising the accusations as retaliatory, rooted in interpersonal conflicts rather than criminal behavior. As proceedings advance, the court will weigh evidence from both sides to determine the veracity of the claims.
