The Foreign Office has issued an urgent warning that "the risk of sudden escalation is high" in the Middle East amid "unusual" activity by UK submarines. Official FCDO guidance updated on October 27 urges Brits to prepare for possible flight cancellations and travel disruptions.
The warning comes as it is understood that three of the UK's four nuclear deterrent submarines are out at sea. It is not clear why the submarines are deployed; at least one will be armed with nuclear warheads and be on routine patrol, according to Sky.
Submarine Deployment Details
One submarine is likely to be working up to take over the patrol, and the third could be undergoing sea trials, an expert claimed. The deployment suggests improved availability, which has been a problem for the Royal Navy's submarine service in recent years.
A source told The Times, which first reported on the activity, that having three submarines at sea simultaneously is "unusual," though they did not explain why. The UK's enemies and NATO allies will note the activity.
Significance and Response
The deployment could be deemed significant, given the devastating weapons the submarines carry. Hence, the move may be seen as a signal to opponents. The fourth Trident submarine, HMS Victorious, is in Devonport naval base undergoing maintenance.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "Our nuclear deterrent is the cornerstone of our national security, protecting the UK and our NATO allies every moment of every day. We remain the only European ally to commit its nuclear deterrent to the defence of NATO. This means that all NATO Allies already benefit from the protection of our nuclear deterrent."
Travel Advisory Scope
As the submarines are at sea, the Foreign Office alert covers travel in the sky for multiple countries, including Israel, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan and Yemen. The FCDO warns that Iran has declared its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel as tensions continue to escalate.
