The Foreign Office has issued an urgent updated warning to British travellers as tensions in the Middle East escalate, with the UK deploying three nuclear submarines in an action described as "unusual."
The warning, updated on Tuesday, October 27, advises Brits to prepare for possible flight cancellations and travel disruptions as "the risk of sudden escalation is high" in the region. The alert covers multiple countries, including Israel, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, and Yemen.
Submarine Deployment
The travel guidance comes as it is understood that three of the UK's four nuclear deterrent submarines are currently out at sea. The reason for the move has not yet been confirmed, though at least one is expected to be armed with nuclear warheads and on routine patrol, according to Sky.
The other submarines could be working to take over the patrol, with the third potentially undergoing sea trials, an expert claimed. The deployment suggests improved availability, a problem that has affected the Royal Navy's submarine service in recent years.
International Reactions
Having three submarines at sea simultaneously is "unusual" for the UK, a source told The Times, though no further explanation was given. The move will likely be noted by enemies and NATO allies and could be seen as a signal to opponents.
The fourth Trident submarine, HMS Victorious, remains at Devonport naval base undergoing maintenance. Iran has stated its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel.
Official Statement
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "Our nuclear deterrent is the cornerstone of our national security, protecting the UK and our NATO allies every moment of every day."
"We remain the only European ally to commit its nuclear deterrent to the defence of NATO. This means that all NATO Allies already benefit from the protection of our nuclear deterrent."
