Babcock Takes £140M Hit from Reworks to Royal Navy Type 31 Frigates
Babcock Hit by £140M Cost on Royal Navy Frigates

Defence contractor Babcock has announced a significant financial setback of £140 million due to extensive late-stage reworks on its Type 31 frigates being constructed for the Royal Navy. The company attributed the charge to higher than expected levels of rework stemming from design changes, which made modifications more complex and costly as they were carried out in the later stages of construction.

This substantial charge contributed to a decline in Babcock's underlying operating profit, which fell to £293 million for the year, down from £363 million previously. The figure also includes an estimated £100 million revenue reversal, reflecting the financial impact of the reworks on the company's top line.

Impact on Frigate Construction

Babcock is building five Type 31 frigates at its Rosyth facility in Fife, Scotland. The first two vessels have been the most heavily affected by the reworks, while the third and fourth ships remain in the early stages of construction and are expected to face fewer issues. The company is working closely with the Royal Navy and its supply chain to manage the modifications and mitigate further cost overruns.

Broader Financial Performance

Despite the challenges with the frigate contract, Babcock reported an overall increase in revenues, driven notably by stronger performances in its nuclear and aviation divisions. The company also announced plans to return an additional £200 million to shareholders through share buybacks, signaling confidence in its long-term prospects beyond the immediate frigate issues.

The Type 31 frigate programme is a key part of the Royal Navy's modernisation efforts, designed to provide versatile and cost-effective warships for global operations. The cost overrun highlights the complexities of defence procurement and the challenges of managing design changes during construction.
