Army chief tells UK troops 'our nation is going to need you'

The head of the British army has told troops that UK political leaders will have a "frank conversation" with citizens and that the nation "is going to need" its soldiers.

In a speech during a visit to Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, General Sir Roly Walker said every citizen will be asked to make sacrifices and to play their part in the defence of the nation.

Blunt message to soldiers

The army chief delivered the speech to a group of around 700 soldiers.

General Sir Roly Walker's remarks come as he emphasised the need for the public to contribute to national defence efforts.

Call for national contribution

The speech underlined that all citizens will be expected to take on responsibilities in supporting the country's security.

Further details are expected to follow.
