A heated clash unfolded on Channel 5's Jeremy Vine programme Storm and Alexis as hosts and guests debated whether Britain is failing Prince Harry. The discussion was sparked by conflicting accounts from Buckingham Palace and Harry's camp regarding accommodation for his UK visit.
According to Buckingham Palace, an offer of accommodation was made to Prince Harry, but the Sussex team had not confirmed acceptance by Saturday, July 4. Harry's camp, however, claimed he had been granted permission to stay at the Royal residence. This confusion led to a tense exchange on the show.
Guests Argue Over Royal Family's Treatment of Harry
Podcast host Marvyn Harrison expressed frustration, stating: "It's insane that you cannot stay at your own dad's house because you didn't do the administration in time. For me, I think it's a really easy home run and win for the Royal Family to fix and remedy the situation. It would look so good to so many people if they could repair this."
Harrison argued that the Royal Family is "grinding themselves into obscurity" and criticized them for destroying the image of the new Royal Family after promoting Prince William, Princess Catherine, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle as its face. He added: "They are failing him and as a man that protects my family ... the way that they're being spoken about is disgraceful and I'm really sad about it to be honest."
Security Dispute Takes Center Stage
The debate shifted to security concerns, with City AM opinion editor Alys Denby arguing that Harry is no longer entitled to taxpayer-funded security. She said: "He wants taxpayers to stump up, he's a very wealthy man, and he's walked away from his role."
Presenter Storm Huntley countered: "Hold on, the taxpayer has funded security for Taylor Swift; she is a very wealthy woman. Beyonce, Tom Cruise. Crucially, the crux of this complication when it comes to security, and Harry is not the cost of it, because Harry has said he's willing to fund it, it's the access to the intelligence, and it's the access to maybe a bit of security with weapons."
Harrison highlighted credible threats against Harry's life, noting: "There have been credible threats made on his life and his wives." The Duke's unarmed private security lacks access to MI6 or police intelligence, despite six terrorist plots, five of which originated in the UK.
Meghan and Children Not Joining Harry
It was reported that Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were initially planning to join Harry for the first time in five years, but due to the security issue, this will no longer be the case. Harry will make the visit solo.
Alys Denby described the back-and-forth as a "bizarre hokey cokey" but agreed that "everybody wants reconciliation." However, she argued that "Harry and Meghan exploded that by leaving, insulting Britain and insisting taxpayers need to pay for their security, when he lives in a country bristling with guns, he's prepared to go to a war zone."
