Highway Code Warning: Thousands of UK Drivers Unaware of Key Rule Changes
Highway Code Warning: Key Rule Changes Unknown to Many

The Highway Code, a comprehensive set of rules and guidelines for all UK road users, has undergone several updates in recent years. However, experts warn that many drivers remain unaware of these changes, potentially compromising road safety.

Lack of Awareness Among Older Drivers

According to Age Co, one in five drivers over the age of 50 admit they have not revisited the Highway Code since passing their driving tests. This statistic raises significant concerns for all road users, as outdated knowledge can lead to dangerous practices.

The Dutch Reach Rule

Among the most misunderstood regulations is the Dutch Reach rule. This technique requires a driver or passenger to use their opposite hand to open the car door, causing their body to rotate towards the rear of the vehicle. This movement enables them to spot any approaching traffic, particularly cyclists. Age Co revealed that almost half of the respondents were unsure about this rule, despite its importance in preventing injuries.

The Highway Code itself is not a legal document, but many of its directives are underpinned by legislation. According to the RAC, points supported by law are clearly identified using words like 'MUST' or 'MUST NOT', rather than 'should' or 'should not'.

Gov.uk guidance states: "The Highway Code is essential reading for all road users, including pedestrians, mobility scooter users, cyclists, horse riders, drivers and motorcyclists." Age Co added: "Understanding road safety rules and regulations help keep our roads safe, so it's important to refresh your knowledge regularly to stay up to date with the latest changes."
