A bright green parcel locker that was abruptly installed on a quiet cul-de-sac has been removed after less than a month, following an outcry from residents. Homeowners on Arne Road in Walsgrave, Coventry, were furious after the 8ft-tall delivery locker was placed on their doorsteps on April 10.
Residents' Anger Over Unsightly Locker
The battery-run, solar-powered delivery point, owned by Yeep!, was located half a mile from the nearest shop. Locals claimed they never saw it used once since its installation. They reported being initially told that a concrete base was being prepared for a new salt box, only to discover the 'eyesore' box just yards from their living rooms.
John Davies, 77, who lives a few doors down, said residents were 'overjoyed' after the u-turn. However, he questioned why it was ever placed there, as it was never used and sat far from shops. 'Thankfully, it has been removed yesterday afternoon, some men came and took it away,' he said. 'Apparently, they had been given 28 days to take it down anyway, but to get it gone this quick is amazing. I hope it makes them think about where they put these things in the future. It was an awful shock for us.'
His wife, Suzanna Davies, 57, added: 'It's outrageous, we were on holiday and when we got back it was there, plonked in the middle. We all care for where we live. There's pretty flowers and we all help with the mowing. It's all resident parking only, so there's more risk of traffic and a danger to kids.'
Company Apologises and Removes Locker
Lynda Congrave, 79, who has lived on the street for 40 years, said: 'I can't believe it's right outside my living room window. It's disgusting.' Jamie Dickinson, CEO of Yeep!, apologised to residents, stating that an internal review is underway. He said: 'Yeep! would like to apologise unreservedly to the residents of Arne Road. We have investigated the circumstances and acknowledge that the location was wholly unsuitable. We have taken immediate action to deactivate and remove the locker. We have also reviewed our internal procedures and are implementing strengthened controls to prevent a similar experience.'
Residents now hope the concrete base left behind will also be removed.
