Girl Detained Under Mental Health Act After School Stabbing

A 14-year-old girl arrested after two pupils and a member of staff were injured in a knife attack at a school has been detained under the Mental Health Act, police have confirmed. The incident occurred at Co-op Academy in north Manchester on Tuesday morning, prompting a swift response from Greater Manchester Police.

Arrest and Detention

The girl was arrested on suspicion of assault following reports of a stabbing at the school on Plant Hill Road, Blackley. According to police, she has now been detained under the Mental Health Act. The three victims—a 14-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy, and a 27-year-old male staff member—were taken to hospital after the attack. All three have since been discharged after assessment, police said on Wednesday evening.

School's Quick Action

Staff at the school acted swiftly to restrain the girl after the incident, preventing any further harm to students or staff before officers arrived moments later. The school initiated a lockdown following the attack, ensuring the safety of all pupils.

Police Statement

City of Manchester North Chief Inspector Jon Shilvock expressed concern for those affected: "Our thoughts are with those that were injured and were caught up in the incident. While the physical injuries were not believed to be serious, we know the impact to those that were involved or were witnesses to this will be significant, and we want to reassure our community we are taking this very seriously."

He urged the public not to speculate on social media, as names related to the incident are being circulated unhelpfully. "This is also causing concern with the victims and those that have been impacted, therefore we would stress that people do not speculate regarding this incident," Shilvock added.

Ongoing Support

Officers will remain in and around the area to provide support and ensure staff, students, and the wider community feel safe. Chief Inspector Shilvock encouraged anyone with concerns to speak to officers on site.
