A popular TikTok binman has warned that households risk having their rubbish left behind if they break a little-known rule about wheelie bin weight limits. Even if the lid closes, bins that are too heavy may be rejected by collection crews.
Weight Limits for Wheelie Bins
In the UK, typical domestic wheelie bin weight limits vary depending on the local authority. Most modern refuse lorries have onboard weight sensors that can alert teams when a bin exceeds safe lifting thresholds, typically 30-50kg. If a bin surpasses this limit, it is likely to be refused and left at the roadside on collection day.
TikTok user Ashley (@Theno1.binman), who works for a local authority, explained: "Where I am, the bins are only plastic, so it's not going to handle much weight if you're going up and down curbs. If I go down the curb and it busts a wheel, you can have a broken bin and next time they might be taken because I'm not able to pull it."
How to Avoid Overloading Your Bin
Ashley advises residents not to overfill their bins and to distribute waste between general waste, recycling, and garden waste bins. He said: "Please do not overfill your bins and make them really heavy because it's just not fun trying to move a heavy bin and putting your back out. If you can't move it, how do you expect us to move it?"
Food waste, which holds significant water, adds bulk and weight. Transferring it to a kitchen caddy or home composting bin can lighten the load. For heavy items like rubble, take them to a household recycling centre. Furniture in good condition can be listed on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Vinted, or arrange a bulky waste collection with the council.
Most councils provide larger or extra wheelie bins free of charge for households with more than five people, medical needs, or several children in nappies. Check your council's guidance as eligibility varies.
Ashley concluded: "Don't jump in the bins or anything like that, just take it to the tip. Maybe recycle more and use the other bins instead of just your general waste bin. It helps everybody, and your other bins will not get as full."
