Sadiq Khan Demands Labour Pledge to Rejoin EU in Next Manifesto

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has issued a stark call for the Labour Party to include a firm commitment to reverse Brexit and rejoin the European Union in its manifesto for the upcoming general election. In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Sir Sadiq argued that growing global instability, particularly under the presidency of Donald Trump, necessitates a dramatic shift in policy.

The Labour politician emphasised that he witnesses the daily consequences of Brexit, which he described as damaging not only to London but to its residents economically, socially, and culturally. "I see on a daily basis the damage Brexit has done," Khan stated, advocating for a clear path back into the EU.

His proposed roadmap includes rejoining both the customs union and the single market, measures he believes are crucial for stability. "We should, as a Labour Party, fight the next general election with a clear manifesto commitment: a vote for Labour means we would rejoin the European Union," he asserted, calling this move "inevitable" given the changed global landscape.

Trump's Election and Global Instability as Key Factors

Khan pointed to the election of Donald Trump as a pivotal reason to revisit Brexit, highlighting the US president's unpredictable policies. He cited Trump's imposition of tariffs on allies and adversaries alike, which has created significant economic uncertainty unforeseen in previous elections.

Additionally, Khan referenced US involvement in conflicts, such as the war in Iran with Israel, which he argued affects oil prices and the cost of living, further destabilising the global economy. "In an incredibly unstable world and with Donald Trump in power in America, Europe is our only security," he warned, urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party to adopt a rejoin pledge.

Labour's Internal Stance and Government Response

Chancellor Rachel Reeves recently echoed concerns about Brexit, warning that the UK risks being "stranded" between rival trading blocs unless it seeks closer alignment with Brussels. She claimed such alignment could help reduce prices and inflation, though noted some regulatory divergence would remain.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has attempted to reset relations with the EU to improve trade ties, criticising the "wild promises" made during the Brexit campaign. However, Downing Street has firmly dismissed rejoining the customs union, single market, or freedom of movement, stating these are red lines per the government's manifesto.

A spokesman emphasised the desire for a closer economic partnership without unpicking existing trade deals, such as those with the US and India. Meanwhile, the UK and EU are working towards agreements on a youth mobility scheme and other collaborative areas by their next summit.

Khan's bold proposal sets the stage for intense debate within Labour, as the party balances internal divisions with the pressing need to address Brexit's lingering impacts amid a turbulent global climate.
