First Female Welder to Represent US at WorldSkills

A Michigan community college student is set to make history as the first female welder to represent the United States at the WorldSkills Competition, often described as the Olympics of the skilled trades. Mikala Sposito, a 21-year-old from Dexter, Michigan, earned her place by winning the USA Weld Trials in Huntsville, Alabama, earlier this year.

A Dream Realized

Growing up, Sposito aspired to be a trailblazer. 'I always wanted to be the first female to do something,' she said. That dream is now becoming a reality as she prepares to compete in Shanghai, China, this September. The competition evaluates technical execution and craftsmanship under strict time constraints and international standards.

Training and Mentorship

Sposito, a student at Washtenaw Community College (WCC), is the sixth WCC student to qualify for WorldSkills in welding, a record unmatched by any other US school. Her instructor and mentor, Alex Pazkowski, who finished second in 2013, accompanied her to the trials and will coach her through a series of competitions in Canada and Australia leading up to the main event. Pazkowski emphasizes the demanding nature of the preparation: 'She has a long, hard road ahead, with 80 hours of practice per week. But if she succeeds, it will open many doors.'

Overcoming Gender Stereotypes

Sposito downplays the gender aspect of her achievement. 'Welding doesn’t require brute strength; it’s about fine precision,' she explained. However, she acknowledges the underrepresentation of women in the field and hopes her success will inspire others. 'Being the first female to do it is very cool, and I’m happy to be inspirational for many women in the trades.'

Looking ahead, Sposito plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in welding engineering at Wayne State University and may eventually teach at WCC, following in Pazkowski’s footsteps. For now, she is focused on the competition and the opportunity to travel abroad for the first time.
