The UK Foreign Office has issued an urgent advisory for British nationals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly those in Dubai, to register their presence as tensions escalate across the Middle East. This comes after a series of military actions between the US, Israel, and Iran, with a fragile ceasefire in place but threats of further retaliation.
Why Register Now?
With uncertainty looming, the Foreign Office is urging Brits to use the GOV.UK service to register their presence in the UAE. This ensures that the Foreign Office can send critical travel advice updates directly to registered individuals. To register, you need an accessible email address, mobile number, and your UK passport number.
Background of Tensions
The conflict intensified in February when the US and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran. A ceasefire was declared in April, but on Sunday, Iran launched missiles at Israel, prompting Israeli retaliation. Although both nations have paused hostilities, Iran has warned of a 'severe' response if Israel continues striking southern Lebanon, while Israel has vowed to respond 'forcefully' if attacks resume.
Safety Precautions
The Foreign Office warns that the Iranian regime may target locations associated with the US and Israel. Therefore, British nationals are advised to avoid areas near security or military facilities, as well as US or Israeli-linked sites.
Travel Updates
The department has paused its 'register your interest in flights from UAE' scheme for UK Government-chartered flights, as commercial flights have resumed. Brits still in the UAE needing to return to the UK should check availability with commercial airlines. However, they can still register their presence for further updates.
Expats constitute a significant portion of the UAE population, with many residing in Dubai. The Foreign Office emphasizes the importance of staying informed and prepared during these volatile times.
